Why MacBooks cost three times more

On most Windows laptops the keyboard is a separate part that unclips or unscrews. On MacBooks the keyboard is riveted into the top case, so replacing it means replacing the whole aluminium deck, and the battery often comes along for the ride. That is Apple's design choice, not ours. The price reflects the part, not extra labour padding.

Spilled something on it? Move fast

Power it off now, unplug it, and turn it upside down like a tent. Do not put it in rice and do not turn it on to check if it still works. Sugar and milk drinks are the worst: they dry sticky and conductive, and corrosion starts within days. A laptop opened and cleaned within 24 hours of a spill usually survives with just a keyboard swap. One that sat for a week often needs board repair too.

When you do not need a full replacement

• One loose keycap: the cap or its scissor clip can often be replaced alone.
• Keys repeating or sticking: sometimes cleaning under the caps is enough.
• Backlight dead but keys fine: on some models the backlight sheet is separate.
• Whole rows or random letters dead: that is the membrane or ribbon, and it means replacement.

How long it takes

Windows laptops: usually same-day if we have the part, one to three days if it needs ordering, since keyboards are model-specific down to the layout. MacBook top-case jobs take one to two days. Every replacement gets tested key by key before it leaves.
