Phone Has No Sound? Speaker & Mic Problems Explained

Symptom Diagnosis

Last updated:

Audio problems range from an easy settings fix to a failed speaker or audio chip. Before assuming the worst, run these quick checks to narrow down whether it's the loudspeaker, the earpiece, or the microphone.

Step 1 — Rule Out Simple Causes

  • Check the phone isn't on silent/Do Not Disturb and the volume is up.
  • Remove any case or screen protector blocking the speaker or mic holes.
  • Gently clean the speaker grille and mic ports — lint and dust muffle sound.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth — audio may be routing to a paired device.
  • Restart the phone to clear a stuck audio process.

Step 2 — Work Out Which Part Has Failed

  • No sound on speakerphone/media but calls are fine → loudspeaker fault.
  • Can't hear callers on the earpiece but speaker works → earpiece speaker fault.
  • Callers can't hear you → microphone fault (test with a voice memo).
  • No audio anywhere, including recordings and Siri → Audio IC fault on the board.
  • Crackling or cutting out → damaged speaker or a failing flex cable.

Possible Causes & Repairs

  • Faulty loudspeaker or earpiece → Speaker replacement (RM 150–500, 30 min–2 hrs)
  • Microphone not working → Mic replacement (RM 150–500, 30 min–2 hrs)
  • No audio at all / Audio IC failure → Audio IC repair (RM 200–700, 1–2 days)
  • Dust-clogged grille → General servicing & cleaning (RM 80–200, same day)

What NOT to Do

  • Don't poke metal pins into the speaker mesh — you'll damage the driver.
  • Don't blast compressed air directly into ports; it can push debris deeper.
  • Don't assume it's broken before testing with a voice memo and speakerphone.
  • Don't ignore audio loss after water exposure — it often signals Audio IC corrosion.
