Laptop Screen Flickering? Here's What's Wrong
Symptom Diagnosis
Last updated:
A flickering laptop screen is usually one of four things: a software/driver glitch, a wrong refresh-rate setting, a loose or pinched display cable, or a failing screen panel. Software causes are free to fix yourself; hardware causes need a repair. Here's how to tell which one you have.
Quick Answer — Software or Hardware?
- Flicker only in certain apps or after an update → software/driver (free to fix).
- Flicker changes when you move or flex the lid → loose or pinched display cable (hardware).
- Flicker with lines, colour bands, or dead areas → failing panel (hardware).
- Flicker on an external monitor too → graphics/GPU issue, not the panel.
Common Causes
- Display driver bug — very common after a Windows or macOS update.
- Refresh rate mismatch — screen set to the wrong Hz.
- Loose or worn display cable (LVDS/eDP) — often near the hinge, worsens with lid movement.
- Failing backlight or panel — flicker plus dimming, lines, or colour shifts.
- GPU fault — flicker or artifacts that also show on an external monitor.
- Power/battery issue — flicker that tracks with charging or heavy load.
What You Can Try Yourself
- Restart the laptop — clears temporary driver glitches.
- Update or roll back the graphics driver (Device Manager on Windows).
- Set the refresh rate to the recommended value in Display settings.
- Plug in an external monitor — if it flickers too, it's the GPU, not the panel.
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) — if the Task Manager window itself flickers, it's likely hardware/driver; if only apps flicker, it's software.
- Gently move the lid through its angles — if flicker changes, suspect the cable (stop flexing it and get it looked at).
When to See a Technician
- Flicker changes with lid angle or when you press the bezel — cable issue.
- Lines, coloured bands, or dead patches appear — panel failing.
- The screen dims and flickers together — backlight or backlight IC.
- Software steps (driver, refresh rate, external monitor test) didn't help.
- Flicker started after a drop, knock, or liquid spill.

- Software / driver fix + diagnostic: often resolved at no or low cost during diagnosis
How We Diagnose It
At Fix It Jerry in Kuala Lumpur we start with a free diagnostic to separate software from hardware — driver checks, an external-monitor test, and a cable inspection near the hinge. That tells us whether you need a RM 150 cable, a backlight IC fix, or a full panel, so you're not paying for the wrong repair. We quote a firm price before any work begins.
