Phone Battery Draining Fast? Here's Why & How to Fix It
Symptom Diagnosis
Last updated:
A battery that drains in a few hours is one of the most common phone complaints — and the cause isn't always the battery itself. Here's how to tell the difference between a software issue you can fix yourself and hardware that needs replacing.
Step 1 — Rule Out Software First
- Check which apps are draining power: Settings > Battery shows usage per app.
- Force-close or uninstall any app using power in the background it shouldn't.
- Turn off Background App Refresh and location for apps that don't need it.
- Restart the phone — a stuck process can silently drain the battery for days.
- Install pending OS updates; battery bugs are often fixed in point releases.
Step 2 — Check Your Battery Health
On iPhone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% maximum capacity, the battery is worn and will drain noticeably faster. On Android, dial *#*#4636#*#* or use a battery-info app. If health is low, no amount of software tweaking will fix it — the cell itself has degraded.
Signs the Battery Itself Is the Problem
- Drains fast even when idle or on standby overnight.
- Phone shuts off at 20–40% and needs a charge to restart.
- Battery percentage jumps or drops suddenly (e.g. 50% to 15%).
- Phone runs warm during light use or while charging.
- Back panel feels raised or the screen is lifting — a swollen battery (stop using it immediately).
Possible Causes & Repairs
- Worn or swollen battery → Battery replacement (RM 180–600, 30–60 min)
- Rogue app or software fault → OS reinstall & optimisation (RM 100–300, 1–2 hrs)
- Charging IC fault causing overcharge cycles → Charging IC repair (RM 200–700, 1–2 days)
- General wear / dust affecting cooling → General servicing (RM 80–200, same day)
What NOT to Do
- Don't keep using a swollen battery — it's a fire and puncture risk.
- Don't rely on cheap 'battery saver' apps — most do nothing useful.
- Don't fully drain to 0% repeatedly; it accelerates lithium-ion wear.
- Don't fit an unbranded battery yourself — poor cells swell and can damage the board.
